Ebook About
The James River Chronicles brings the magnificent James River of Virginia to life! Immerse yourself in. first hand accounts of days gone by. Lose yourself in stories about the James River and the folks who lived along it or made their living from it. Captain Ron Baha is the Bohemian Skipper - an icon to those who love the James River.Hear what he has to say in his own words. These are my personal remembrances that began when I was a child of the 1940's, and today as I turn the page for my eightieth year I have returned to make new memories with a new breed of workers and entreprenuers just a "stone's throw" from my childhood haunt on Dutch Gap Island.Bohemian Skipper was not written solely for the enjoyment you will have from reading it, but to preserve a history that would have been lost if I had passed on before it had been written. The book is unique in two ways; first, it is only because I tagged along behind my dad from the time that I was four years old that I can tell some of these stories, and secondly, each chapter stands alone to tell its own story, yet all twenty-eight of them will come full circle to tell of a larger and more colorful world in which I have been blessed to live.In so many ways I was much like a blending of both Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn as I played among my woodsy friends in the forest or along the river's shores. But it was not just any island's high bluff where I played and whiled away my time as I would later learn. It was the site of Henricus, the second English settlement after Jamestown, where every settler was slaughtered when Opechancanough had the town burned to the ground during the Indian Massacre of 1622.However, on the other end of "my" Island there was located the Southern Materials Company, a sand and gravel mining operation, and my daddy worked for them as a tugboat captain. In those years lawyers were not lurking in the shadows or peaking around every corner to find a way to sue someone or some company. Therefore, i had free range to mingle with the men aboard the company's tugs and barges, or work floats where the caulkers would sing their songs, or climb onto the tops of dredges or their sand and gravel piles or to snag a fish along the company's shorelines. Most of all I liked the times when I would sail with my dad on the old tug, Atlas. By the time I was nine years old, I would help him to work on the engine or the decks of the Saint Arthur, an old and rotting, turn of the century wooden tugboat, that would eventually lift our family out of poverty. From the age of four, there was never a time when I did not hang out on the tugs and along the rivers except during the summer when I would go to my grandpa's farm to work in the fields. Two weeks were spent hoeing grass from around his peanut vines. Two weeks were spent pulling tobacco leaves for his neighbors, old Mr. Phillips who live on the farm next to him, and the Williamses' who lived just up the road a ways. And like my dad, I also became a tugboat skipper and I have never given up my love for the river or the people who frequent it.In this book, I will share my experiences with you - experiences from the river, but also experiences lived through the lives of seafaring captains from around the world. Like a true Bohemian, I have traveled the world and had adventures I could never have envisioned as a youth. I'm excited to take you on this journey with me!This book is just the beginning as I continue to write and bring the James River to life!WELCOME ABOARD!
